The Gannon type frigate was modified from a partly completed D'Lacy class. The Gannon was refitted during construction to better suit the type for deep exploration missions. The Gannon retains the D'Lacy's armament and has replaced the fifty ton cutter with two twenty-five ton Moth class away boats. Potentially a third could be carried in the internal hanger, but it is planned that this will be used to conduct maintenance on the two externally carried away boats. The Gannon has also been fitted with an electronics and machine shop, a fully equipped sick bay and two laboratories. This has come at the expense of a reduction in manuever fuel capacity, a smaller fuel purification plant and almost every crewperson other than the captain being required to share a small stateroom. The Gannon (FFX-12) has just completed her trials and been commissioned into the Alston League Scout Service. It is hoped that the experience gained with her and her newly completed sister ship Jerome, will be used in designing from the keel up a completely new class of vessels capable of deep exploration missions with a good survival chance. |
