The series 300 gunboat was proposed as an alternative design to the smaller
series 250. The principle changes were to be a different configuration to keep
weight down, a cylinder rather than wedge, and the provision of a new 400Mj
laser lance capable of a high rate of fire of 400/30 minutes rather than the
maximum 200/30 minutes in the series 250. This laser lance would normally be
powered only to 300/30 minutes. In order to achieve the higher rate of fire it
was proposed that maneuver G's be cut back to 2 rather than the rated 3. The
designers felt that this would still be adequate to deal with most merchantmen,
and that in a defensive role the lower maneuver capacity would not be a real
problem.
Alston League naval procurement people have expressed doubt at this concept,
and thus far no orders for the series 300 have been made.
