The Altron class heavy fuel shuttle was designed to be carried by the Appleleaf
class fleet tankers to provide some flexibility in fuelling and skimming
operations. The five Altrons assigned to an Appleleaf provide a total
fuel-cargo volume of 29,045 kilolitres (assuming the Altrons reaction mass is
not utilised). This means that 205 skimming runs would be required by each
Altron to refuel the tanker completely (excluding power plant fuel). This type
of operation is best carried out in secure areas.
The Altrons can be readily configured from L-Hyd to dry cargo storage and can
carry the same volume in general stores when configured in this manner without
loss of performance. As a consequence Altrons have found their way into use as
more general heavy shuttles and in-system bulk carriers.
