The Appleleaf class fleet tankers are a long obsolete class designed to provide refuelling and limited resupply to major units of the imperial navy. It is here that the major problem of the Appleleaf shows up. As imperial dreadnought size increased the utility of the Appleleaf class became reduced. For example a Tigress class battleship would require for a full refuel (excluding power plant) 4,062,500 kl of liquid hydrogen. An Appleleaf can supply this only by eating into the tankers own reaction mass. Reducing the allowance from 40 GHours to 13.4. With smaller battleships this is not such a severe problem. The Appleleaf class is capable of skimming gas giants for fuel, however the class also carries five Altron class heavy fuel shuttles which are capable of independent operation, this is the preferred method of operation when there is sufficient time. Given the general age and fuel capacity of this class they are now generally employed in rear area supply operations or for refuelling cruiser squadrons. |
