The Chardonnay class of transport tanker was originally designed as a variant
of the Black Rover class fleet tanker with which it shares most components. The
Chardonnay is a more general purpose
vessel carrying extensive "dry" stores missile reloads and L-Hyd for refuelling.
As a consequence vessels of this class are normally assigned to Cruiser and
Assault squadrons where the more limited amount of fuel available for
refuelling is not such a problem as it would be with a Battle squadron.
