The Skirmish carrier, as its name indicates, is intended to carry craft used mainly for screening of a larger task force, or for lighter raiding and strike operations against civilian or lightly defended military targets. The ship is too slow and lightly armored to withstand larger capital ships in a stand up battle, and its acceleration is poor, making it heavily dependent upon escorts for protection against enemy counterattack. The Skirmish was first deployed in the 1070s, and it became a common sight in many frontier areas. At least a few thousand were built prior to the Imperial Final War, and most of these were lost in fleet actions or Black War raids in the subsequent hostilities. The ship's heavy laser weaponry make it deadly against smaller warships and fighters.
