The Tourbillon class spaceplane is a minimal capability single stage to orbit transfer vehicle. Craft essentially identical to the Tourbillon can be found being built on lower technology worlds throughout humanspace. Like many spaceplanes the principal weakness of the design is that it requires atmospheric oxygen to power the turbofan and ramjet clusters. The vehicle also makes use of an airframe lifting body to assist in reaching orbit so worlds without significant atmospheres can pose problems if they also have significant gravity. Normal mission parameters call for the craft to have a small amount of rocket fuel remaining upon reaching orbit in order to initiate de-orbit burns followed by a glide-landing or to maneuver into a docking station on a larger vessel or spacestation. |
