The Cirrus class spaceplane is a marginal single stage to orbit transfer vehicle. Built by some low technology worlds both within and beyond the borders of the Solomani Confederation, craft of this kind can be found on many worlds desiring some orbital space capacity who do not have access to higher levels of technology. The principal weakness of the design is that it requires atmospheric oxygen to power the turbojet and ramjet clusters. The vehicle also makes use of an airframe lifting body to assist in reaching orbit. Normal mission parameters call for the craft to have a small amount of rocket fuel remaining upon reaching orbit in order to initiate de-orbit burns followed by a glide-landing. |
