Originally the Gemsting class of heavy fighter was designed to replace some of
the
Black Widow class fighters still being operated by the Solomani. In the event
the replacement was only partially completed at the time of the collapse. A
large number were also built but never delivered to the units they were
intended for.
Compared to the Black Widow the Gemsting did not carry a standard turret socket
and was instead fitted with two laser lances. This reduced the utility of the
fighter to some degree. The principal weakness of the design however was its
armour
which was much thinner than that of the Black Widow thus reducing the
survivability rate. As a consequence they were not popular with their crews and
this also explains why a number of squadrons equipped with the Black Widow
managed to delay conversion to the Gemsting until the collapse.
