The history of the state known as Woal Warliyir can be traced back to the dying days of the Aslan Border Wars when the Woaleakh were a mid sized clan based largely in the Dark Nebula Sector. Caught in the constant interclan machinations within the Aslan Hierate the clan fell out of favour and rather than being absorbed or driven into a subservient position the Woaleakh did what many other Aslan clans did, they left the Hierate to seek new lands farther out. The clan arrived on the world they named Warliyi in 3800 AD and set about recreating Hierate institutions. In this they succeeded to such an extent that they became a sort of culturally super Hierate Aslan, many changes which effected the conservative Hierate as a result of their contact with the Solomani and Third Imperium did not occur in the Woal Warliyir. Later arrivals from other clans of the Hierate found themselves pushed into vassal positions subservient to the Woal Warliyir. The population grew rapidly exhausting the available land on Warliyir and in order to avoid local strife the Woal Warliyir began to push out to the neighbouring systems. In 4001 AD the Woal Warliyir began to make moves into the Grange (now Hope) subsector, threatening all thirteen human colonised star-systems in the subsector. At this time the most advanced system in the subsector was the planet Nakajima. The president of Nakajima sent admiral Canning Xiang to Baleares. The Admirals squadron arrived in the Baleares system a mere hour before a Woal Warliyir raiding force. Without any treaties negotiated admiral Xiang took upon himself the defence of the system and in a series of running battles with the Warliyir forces admiral Xiang managed to destroy the bulk of the raiding force, and capture two light cruisers which he presented to Baleares. The mutual defence pact proved very easy to negotiate after this demonstration of the Nakajiman determination to keep the Woal Warliyir out of the subsector. Woal Warliyir had not finished with the systems of the subsector however so that in 4005 AD a large fleet of Woal Warliyir warships entered the Georgia system and ran into a fleet of human vessels commanded by admiral Canning Xiang of Nakajima. This turned into a climactic series of battles. The Woal Warliyir had superior numbers but the vessels of admiral Xiang were slightly superior and were much better handled. Losses were very high on both sides. No records survived giving the total number of ships involved but the Woal Warliyir invasion fleet totally failed in its objective. It is this series of running battles in the Gerogia system which became known as the battle of the Banners, later giving the entire sector its human name. Parts of the Georgia system are still dangerous as a result of debris from this battle. The result of these battles produced a sense of shock in the Aslan of the Woal Warliyir. The Woal Warliyir had not considered the relatively small military forces of the human worlds to be any impediment to their expansion. The battle of the Banners convinced them that they were wrong and a non agression treaty between the Woal Warliyir and the human worlds of the Grange subsector was finally signed on the planet Georgia. The Woal Warliyir became introspective for awhile not allowing outsiders into Warliyir space, when they looked abroad again they found that another Aslan clan, the Aoiftu Roakh had settled to their rimward. It was not long before they discovered that the Aoiftu Roakh were culturally warped (from their perspective) and should be destroyed. Still mindful of their defeat at the hands of a bunch of human colonies the Woal Warliyir planned very carefully their moves against the Aoiftu Roakh, especially as the Aoiftu Roakh was heavily engaged with a human state called the Trade Confederation. When the Trade Confederation collapsed the Woal Warliyir began a series of initially low key attackes on Aoiftu shipping and colony worlds. The pace of these attacks being gradually increased both in terms of frequency and ferocity. The plan was to cause the collapse of the Aoiftu Roakh thus enabling the Woal Warliyir to move in and "re-educate" the twisted group. In the Arafura subsector the Woal Warliyir had more success against their human neighbours and had conquered the human colony on the world the Woal Warliyi called Thalkharl. The human population on the world was decimated and an Aslan form of government installed. The on-again off-again wars between the Woal Warliyir and the Aoiftu Roakh continued to slowly escalate and would have likely resulted in an outbreak of a major war if not for the intervention of virus. The virus swept away both Aslan states and caused a huge amount of damage to Warliyir. The virus also ended the Woal Warliyir occupation of Thalkharl, the Aslan finding their equipment turning against them. The humans managed to overthrow the surviving Aslan. The humans were not without their own losses but managed to hang on on the world they renamed Petermann. Currently Warliyi is a heavily populated world of some ten billion. The Woaleakh clan on Warliyir managed to survive but now have a number of rivals. The Woaleakh suffered especially badly when virus hit since they controlled most of the high tech areas on the world including the starports. As a consequence when the subservient clans and groups came out of their shock of the devastation on Warliyir they observed the weakness of the Woaleakh and using the remnants of the worlds technology built up their own positions until now the Woaleakh are now one clan amongst about eighteen of roughly equivelent strength. The clans are still strongly "Aslan" in culture but tensions are continuing to build due to the increasingly crowded conditions on the world. Several of the new clans have been attempting to build alliances so that more technology can be restored to allow the Aslan to get off world again and "return to their destiny amidt the stars." |
