The asteroid Laertes is a relatively large high density asteroid situated within the A Belt of the EV Lacertae system. It was the high density which attracted mining concerns from Le Royaume des Etoiles du Cygne. The first explorations taking place in 2610 with the first mines following in 2612.

In 2615 the system was for awhile cut off as a result of the rebellion on Lafayette, during which time the mines continued to operate, though at reduced levels. Luckily the rebellion on Lafayette was brought to an end in 2616 and normal commerce with the Laertes facility was restored before too many essential items ran out. Some mine personnel still tell tales of horrific conditions in the mining facilities during the period when virtually no supplies reached the colony.

Presently two mines are operated on Laertes, both under the control of the Daedalus Mining Combine (DMC), all colonists are employees of the corporation and are employed under two year contracts.
