The Ross 154 system was not the subject of an official survey mission by either the United Worlds or its successor the Federated States of Sol. The systems star, Ross 154, being a small red star, the system was considered unlikely to be a suitable candidate for colonisation. However in 2514 a Federated States of Sol merchant starship "Grenadine" suffered a navigation problem en-route from Sol to Barnard's Star and found herself in the Ross 154 system. Finding a habitable world, which the crew named Grenadine, they repaired the equipment failure and return to the Federated States with news of the discovery. The news of a reasonable planet with a breathable atmosphere with the Federation government who were putting most of their resources in to building a fleet of warships with which to "visit" the Alpha Centauri Colonies. Private enterprise and civilians wishing to escape the economically strapped Federation jumped at the chance to escape. Large numbers of converted bulk carriers were hastily fitted with low berths and huge numbers were shipped out to Grenadine until 2523 when the Federation totally collapsed. After this the arrival of colonists at Grenadine slowed, but did not completely stop. Grenadine has continued to grow but is now economically tied closely to the United Worlds Commonwealth. This was inevitable given the location of Ross 154 and that all its imports and exports must be shipped via Barnard's Star in the United Worlds Commonwealth. To possibly find alternate routes to other inhabited systems as well as to open up new territory for exploitation by Grenadine in 2650 the grand duke authorised construction of a deep space station, Serpent Station, some 4.8 light years from Ross 154, outside of Core Space. The station and its attached hyperspace beacon route became operation in 2661 and is being used as a spring board for further exploration. |
