The Reich colony world of Basilisk, actually a moon of the gas giant Ulan, was the first colony established by the Reich following the Reichs introduction of the hyperspace translation drive. The colony being established in 2504 following a brief survey of the Lacaille 9352 star system. The moon is of above average density and this attracted mining interests who soon set up a number of mining facilities on the moon. The moon is also one of the most geologically active bodies discovered. It is theorised that the tidal stresses on the moon will eventually tear the body apart.

With the outbreak of the Reich/UWC war (2638 to 2640) output from the mines was greatly increased and the mines boasted a level of automation almost unmatched in Core Space. However since the end of the war and the virtual collapse of trade within the Reich the infrastructure of the colony and its mining facilities has been gradually degrading. As a consequence the Reich has been "encouraging" migration to the mines to partially compensate for the failing automation. To date mine output has not declined but the number of accidents has been gradually rising.

Current Reich plans are to maintain the colonies on Basilisk but most investment in the systems is now being directed to the colony established on the planet Arpad, which is a marginally habitable planet somewhat closer to Lacaille 9352.

In 2660 an abandoned Thalor base was reportedly found on Basilisk. The local baron belieiving that this would help guarantee funds for Basilisk's future development. In 2661 it was discovered by the Reich that this Thalor base was in fact a fake, apparently placed by the baron of Basilisk yo attract funds. The result of this was the arrest and execution of the baron of Basilisk.
