Back to the Major Componants of the Star System

The Alpha Centuari system was first surveyed via a sublight probe launched from Earth in 2115, arriving in the system in 2158. The survey reported back to Earth the presence of two worlds which appeared capable of supporting human life. These were later named New Home and Corinth.

Following the receipt of the probes telemetary a number of sub-light colony transports were constructed. Four colony transports departed the sol system in 2175, two of them CT-1 Far Venture and CT-2 Far Voyager were targeted at the Alpha Centuari A subsystem. The early colonisation efforts were not without risks however for in 2177, a mere 2 years after leaving Earth orbit, CT-1 Far Venture was lost with all hands when she collided with an uncharted asteroid too large for the onboard systems to cope with.

CT-2 Far Voyager continued on to the Alpha Centuari A subsystem and in 2192 entered orbit around the planet christened New Home. The colony was completely on its own for the next nineteen years when the next sub-light transport CT-11 Starseeker entered the system. In communications with the New Home colony the Starseeker dropped off some follow up supplies to the colony before proceeding to the Alpha Centauri B system to establish the Corinth colony.

The sub-light colony ships were designed to make a single landing and then be cannibalised by the colony for additional supplies. This was done with the Far Voyager, but following discussions Starseeker was kept in an operating condition and made periodic trips between the two colonies. Contact with Earth was minimal, though the occassional small colony ship managed to enter the system. The Starseeker and the small fleet of shuttles the two transports brought with them kept the two colonies in reasonably close contact and both colonies began to grow.

In 2523 a small fleet of faster than light vessels from the Federated States of Sol, who were becomming desperate for resources, entered the Alpha Centauri system and attempted to bully the Centaurans into becomming part of the Federation. By this time the combined colonies total population was around one million and the number of spacecraft in service were small. Technologically however the Centaurans had managed to advance and had somewhat better energy weapons and sensors available than the invading Federation forces. Also the defending vessels were not hampered by the bulk needed to carry hyperspace translation drives making the numerically inferior Centauran ships hard nuts to crack.

What turned the tables completely in favour of the Centaurans was the presence near New Home of the aging colony transport Starseeker. Compared to all the other vessels, both Federation and Centauran, the Starseeker was huge, and though an ancient hull its magnetic ram scoop was still capable of functioning, and this was used to disable a number of Federation vessels, resulting in their capture. With there more advanced technical skills it did not take the Centaurans long to reverse engineer the hyperspace translation drive, and using parts from captured vessels do damaged to repair and repairing those capable of being repaired Centaurus acquired a small FTL fleet of its own.

Eventually the fighting in the Alpha Centuari system dragged to a halt as the Federation could not afford the losses in starships and crews and the Centaurans low population began to tell. But it was the Federation that gave up first pulling out its remaining vessels from the system. The breather this gave Centaurus allowed the FTL fleet it was assembling the time it needed to be completed.

So it was that the small Centauri fleet entered the Sol system causing great surprise. Some vicious fighting in the Sol system took place and several major cities on Earth were virtually destroyed. It was then discovered that the destruction of the cities had been orchestrated by several of the major Earth corporations to foster hatred against Centauri. This realisation eventually resulted in the total cessation of hostilities.

The Centauri fleet had been largely destroyed, but the remaining vessels commanded by Admiral Jennifer Fenchurch rendezvoused with the remains of the Federation fleet where she met with Admiral Edward Curtis. Here plans were put in to effect which resulted in the creation of the United Worlds Commonwealth. As a founding member each of the Centauran colonies were granted two members each in the UWC legislative assembly, later increased to three each as the population grew.

New Home and Corinth continued to grow and to date remain major powers within the United Worlds Commonwealth. The next major challenge was to occur in 2637 when the United Worlds Commonwealth became engaged in war with the Das Sternum Reich. Alpha Centauri was situated on the main trade route linking Earth with Wesse capital of Das Sternum Reich and it became a focal point for the build up of UWC forces and also a target for Reich offensives. Since neither side had fought in a war since the creation of the United Worlds Commonwealth many mistakes were made on both sides and several facilities and cities were damaged on New Home especially, though Corinth was not spared. Eventually though the industrial might of the UWC began to tell and four years later an armistace was signed on Wagner Station, once an outpost of Das Sternum Reich now an independent deep space outpost. The Centaurans believe it was only fitting that the UWC representative at Wagner and who signed on behalf of the peoples of the United Worlds Commonwealth was Arland Fenchurch, a descendent of admiral Jennifer Curtis hero of Centaurus and a founder of the United Worlds Commonwealth.

Twenty years has passed since the end of the Reich war and tensions are beginning to rise again along the UWC-Reich border. So far nothing overt has happened but defences in the system have been tightened and the Centaurans claim they are ready for anything.
