The Ypres class assault carrier was designed to transport a TL9 Rapid Response Battalion, four vessels of this class could transport a Regiment or Brigade. Designed with some reserve capacity built in they served for many years before finally being laid up. At the moment with heightened tensions in near space and with a shortage of military transport vehicles, a few Ypres class vessels were found to be in good enough shape to be returned to service. Unlike most UWC warships of TL9 level the Ypres class have been deemed unsuitable for WESU style modernisation, the principle problem being the small fusion power plant which would be unable to provice sufficient power for all the electronics and weapon systems that the upgrade would entail. As a consequence the surviving Ypres' are only used for training purposes and transport runs on quieter routes and are likely to be scrapped in the near future. The one alteration that did proceed was the replacement of the Ariel and Icarus class shuttles with TL10 Porter class vessels. |
