The Gnat F18-A fighter was designed, like the F16-A Scimitar as a replacement for the F14 series of fighters. Whereas the Scimitar was designed to replace the F14 Scoprion in the deep space role, the Gnat is a gravitic fighter designed for use by planetary forces or by space forces in the planetary attack role.
